New website ready for testing

Call to all who use our current external public website (and to those who like testing new things).

Could you please test the proposed new version of the Devon and Cornwall Police website
http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v5

and complete the website survey that can be found at this address http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/websiteSurvey.

The web team would really appreciate your time and your feedback.

Thank you :)

The survey will be up until the 17 January 2014.

The survey

The survey asks that you locate certain types of information and then grade how easy it was to find the information, and so you will need the survey and the website open at the same time.

The new website is mobile and tablet friendly but just to check we have asked the question 'what did you use to view the site?' and 'were there any problems?' We would also like to know if there were any issues in the browser you were using. If you use a screenreader to view the internet please tell us how the site performs. I have had a look at it in 'Webbie' and a blind user has given us some very useful feedback but the more we receive the better we can make the site for everyone.

We will be publishing the results here on this blog in the new year.

The site

The site as I have said previously is all about getting you to where you need to go efficiently and hopefully the survey will highlight any problems that still need work on.

Not all pages have been created. Those that have display content taken form v4 and it was correct at the time. Please refer to the current site for the latest information.

The techy stuff

The site has been coded in HTML5 and uses some CSS3. The CMS that we will be using is Umbraco. The site will use JavaScript but the final version will display all content without JavaScript needing to be enabled. This may result in the content page being overly long or occasionally the content being spread over a couple of pages.

The site is designed to work with screen-readers but any problems you are experiencing please let us know.

I thank you again and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Karen

New Force website update

I hope later this month and early January to go out and do some useability testing, not the easiest time of  year to do this, as many of you will have the festive season on your mind and the thought of testing a Police Force website well, just doesn't compare with rushing around those shop looking for 'Doctor Who' socks to give to Auntie Mural, but needs must!

All sections of the new site are built and has some content. The News and the Contact sections have also been rejigged hopefully for the better.

If anyone would like to design some icons for the 'Ask the Police', 'Report online,' 'Victim Support,' 'Traffic News' (icons for the site Homepage top left) and the Support & Advice homepage links Help topics that would be super cool. (Cheeky I know, but if you don't ask...)

The Youth site needs some work on it still but in essence its there. At the moment we have decided to ask some university students if they would like to redesign and possibly code jnrspace (and then we will add it to the Force's Umbraco site, creating a separate template and style sheet for it), but for yrspace we thought we could link to the super Fearless site and just have a couple of pages 'using the fabulous yrspace artwork' to add some Devon and Cornwall Police specific content.

We are also adding a new age group 5-7 which again we will link to an external site the 'Think U Know Hector's World' and add a couple of pages for our Force specific content and in particular some of our colouring sheets.

The Youth section will also have some content for parents, and professionals who work with young people and this area will also be the home of the Police Cadets.

The Parent section I am quite keen to grow, so if you have any parenting stories that you wish to share, or know of any good sites we could link to please leave a comment.

I really like the Parent Channel, because it gives reasoned advice and shows lots of videos of real people talking about their experience.

As I said nearly there on the design side of things so please let me know what you think.

Speak soon
Karen

The new Force website update

The focus of the design is where do you want to go and lets get you there as quickly as possible.
This link takes you to the new Force testing website  which will re-size to any device so please test on your mobile and tablet and let me know how it behaves! karen.gandy@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk

The site is nearly ready for some focus group testing, the News, Contact, Crime Prevention and the Local policing site has been created. The Local policing site is being looked at by the Local Policing teams and so far the feedback has been quite positive, although I don't think they are looking forward to the retraining!

The site is not overly populated with content as the purpose of this testing site is for internal staff to see how their section is going to look and for members of the public to test it's useability.

The site works well in all modern browsers I've tested in.  And is usable in the dreaded IE6, although  I will need to do some more robust testing.  The site needs to function in IE6 as from the Google monthly stats we can see that a few of our site users are still using it!

If you come across a problem please let me know and in which browser and version the problem accured.

I'm presently working on the About section and then will return to the Support & advice section.

Hope you like what you see, but if you don't let me know.

Until next time
Karen

The new force website (V5)

The site Homepage

The focus of the design is where do you want to go and lets get you there as quickly as possible.

This link takes you to the new homepage of the Force website which will re-size to any device so please test on your mobile and tablet and let me know how it behaves! karen.gandy@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk

The design is throwing up a few questions which I would like your thoughts on:

  1. Do we need a SM (social media) link within the top strip? (I have placed a generic link rather than the logo links. Logo links to our Force accounts can be found at the bottom of the page.) The top SM link will go to a page of links to all our social media accounts including individual officers.
  2. Should the link to Local policing be called Local to you / Your community / Your team? For the moment I've gone for Local to you because we have many holiday makers and students and so that seems to fit better.
  3. LEICESTER has had their site redesigned and I like it, it is very gov.uk site like, very clean. They also have a campaign banner after their header but I'm of the opinion it is better to get people to where they need to be rather than distract them. Leicester also has a separate mobile site which doesn't display the banner at all.
  4. I like the V5 six big navigation buttons that the new design has, but I may need to still play with the styling.
  5. News section should this even be on the homepage? If it should, should it be underneath the six buttons which could then have more room. The news area would then also have more room and could then display other news and appeals like missing people? This would however make load times longer and the site when viewed on a mobile, the page very long. At the moment I have decided against adding more information to this page and in-fact I have removed the form and the address details, as one commentator suggested a little while ago.
What do you think a Police homepage should display and link to?

I would be interested in your thoughts so please leave a comment or drop me an email.

Progress of the new Devon & Cornwall website

The new website is being front end coded for testing at the moment. I am aiming to complete a static working site for members of the public, our partners and staff to test by mid August. This static site will have no dynamic content (no linkage to a database of content.) It is purely to test the look and feel of the site and to suggest how certain features will work. It is hoped that by doing this we will get fewer if any, change requests once the developers start programming the site.

The developers are presently working on the APIs, that will handle the information from its various sources and push it out to the appropriate webpage when called by a user.

Speak again in a couple of weeks, hopefully with a link to the testing site.

First coded html design of the homepage

The wireframe homepage has been coded and can be found at the link below.
New homepage of the Devon and Cornwall Police website.

The coding follows the principle of mobile first and uses 4 screen width break points, what this means is that if you view the site with your mobile or tablet the layout of the site will change for ease of viewing.

I have left the Search top left for ease of those using screen magnifiers.

The web team meeting this morning discussed the need:
  • for all social media links to be within the top strip, which especially when viewed using a mobile pushes the main content of the page down the screen.
  • The icons to the left of the logo are not descriptive enough.
    • Where do you think the icons will take you?
      • Three people shapes
      • Warning triangle
      • Question mark
      • Pencil
  • News and appeal stories should not be displayed on the homepage
  • News and appeals should be displayed but given more room
  • We do / don't need a homepage presence for Court and Convicted.
  • We do / don't need a contact form in the footer
What do you think?

If you use assistive technology to view websites, how does this page perform? (Most links will not go anywhere.)

I will be working on another design based on this one and will post a link to it by the end of next week all being well.

As always thank you for taking the time to visit our blog.

New layout for homepage of the Devon & Cornwall Police site

The below is the new wireframe for the new Devon & Cornwall Police website.

This layout is generally agreed to be an improvement on the present site, there is however some debate on certain aspects of the placement of some key features.

We would like your thoughts please:
Should the search which I have placed top right so that those using screen magnifiers can locate it more easily infact be placed top left?
Do we need the 8 quick link buttons top right (adjacent to the logo)?
Do we need the partner links in the footer?
Do we need the Force main address in the footer?
Do we need a contact form in the footer?

Wireframe layout of the new Force website

The web designer would very much appreciate your feedback: email websitemessaging@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk.
Thank you.

Black and white layouts of new Devon and Cornwall Police website designs

Your feedback

The web team have created some layouts for the new version of the website and would like your thoughts.

The layouts are black and white illustrations of where we think the main blocks of content will go and roughly the shape they will take.

The underlying aim of the new site is to make it easier to navigate and with this in mind we have limited page clutter and the number of page links.

Please let us know what you think, at this stage things can be changed very easily, further down the line in the development process it becomes more difficult.

We thank you for your time.
